Pastor’s Bookshelf - Welcome To My Bookshelf!
Each month I will discuss a recent book that I’ve finished.
This time I’d like to talk about
“Practicing The Way ”
by John Mark Comer
This was my first time reading the works of John Mark Comer. I had several conversations with pastors I respect, and they were all talking about how great his books are - and so I thought I would check it out. To be honest, I now understand the excitement - this book is a gift to the Christian life.
The subtitle of the work is “Be with Jesus. Become like him. Do as he did.” and it approaches living the Christian life as being an apprentice of Jesus. It’s very practical and extremely thoughtful. It actually took me longer than usual to read through the whole thing because every 20 minutes of reading I would have to pause and just chew on what he said. I do recommend the audiobook version, as it is read by the author himself.
While his voice is soft and his teachings gentle - I would also say that they are extremely challenging. As someone who loves to “go, go, go” I was really convicted by John’s call to slow down in our following of Jesus. He gives great guidance on how to find God’s presence in our lives, and how to live the way Jesus teaches us to live as followers of the way. Perhaps the next book I’ll pick up from him is “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” - which is something I’m no good at at all 😂.
